For something a little different this year, try renting a houseboat on one of Texas’ beautiful lakes. Texas has several lakes that allow houseboat rentals. Make sure you are prepared for a great time. Always pack your camera, snacks, and some cool clothes. The temperatures on some of these lakes can easily reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer months.

If you enjoy a dry hot climate then perhaps Lake Amistad will be the right one for you. Lake Amistad is on the border of the United States and Mexico, which is fed by the Rio Grande and Devils Rivers. Lake Amistad is a reservoir that is used during times of drought, so the water levels in this lake can vary drastically. This lake is great for hiking, fishing, and swimming. It has beautiful sandy beaches for those that like to relax in the sun. Lake Amistad has many miles of coastline for you to explore while on your houseboat. Be sure to check out the limestone cliffs which display the artwork of Indians that used to live in these areas. The artwork here is truly amazing and definitely worth taking some time out of your day to look at. Lastly, there is a ton of wildlife that lives near Lake Amistad. Since this is such a major source of water within the arid desert, you can see all types of birds and small animals here.


Another beautiful lake that is perfect for houseboats is Lake Meredith. Lake Meredith is located in the plains of northern Texas. It is about 45 miles northeast of Amarillo, Texas. This lake is well known for its fishing. In fact, it boasts the best walleye fishing in the whole state of Texas! All types of fish can be found in Lake Meredith such as walleye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, white bass, catfish, and crappie. While on your houseboat be sure to try out your fishing skills and see if you can catch one of these! The weather is not quite as warm as in the south, but it still can reach well into the 90’s. Make sure you stay well hydrated while on your boat. If fishing does not interest you, there is coastline and beaches that you may explore.
